AMS FRESHMAN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN USA, 2014

Applications are invited for AMS freshman undergraduate scholarship program to study the atmospheric and related sciences. Scholarship program is open to all high school students for pursuing undergraduate degree at a US institution. The scholarship stipend is $5000, awarding $2500 each year (for the freshman and sophomore years). The second-year funding is dependent on successful completion of the first year. AMS encourages applications from women, minorities and disabled students who are traditionally underrepresented in the atmospheric and related oceanic sciences. The application deadline is 7 February 2014.

Eligibility:
-Applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status.
-Applicants must be entering their freshman year of college in the fall of 2014 as a full-time student and plan to pursue a degree in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences.
-Students eligible to apply for the AMS Minority Scholarship Program and the AMS Freshman Scholarship Program may apply to both programs, but may only accept one AMS scholarship.

Scholarship Description: The American Meteorological Society is pleased to announce the AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship program, open to all high school students and designed to encourage study in the atmospheric and related sciences. Serving as a unique example of various sectors of our field joining together to support young, talented minds, the scholarships are being sponsored by partners in industry, as well as through named scholarships either established by an AMS member or in memory of someone. The sponsors of these scholarships have all recognized the importance in encouraging young people to enter into the atmospheric and related sciences and thus have made generous contributions in support of the 2014 AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship Program.

Duration of award(s): The two-year scholarships, funded by industry and AMS members, are for a nine-month period in the freshman year and an additional $2500 for a nine-month period in the sophomore year. Second year funding depends on successful completion of the first academic year. Students who will be entering their freshman year of college in fall 2014 are eligible to apply.

What does it cover? The scholarship stipend is $5000, awarding $2500 each year (for the freshman and sophomore years). The second-year funding is dependent on successful completion of the first year. AMS may terminate a scholarship when a student in no longer in good academic standing, when a student is no longer a full-time student, or when a student is no longer enrolled in a program preparing for a degree in the atmospheric and related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, as determined by AMS.

Selection Criteria: The evaluation of applicants will be based on applicant’s performance in high school, including academic records, recommendation, scores from a national college exam, and a written essay. Selections will be made by the AMS Executive Committee based on recommendations from the AMS Committee of Judges for Undergraduate Awards. The AMS does not prepare written evaluations of either successful or unsuccessful candidates.
Notification: The announcement of winners is expected to be made in May 2014.
How to Apply: Applicants should apply by post. To keep the evaluation fair for all, do not send additional documents. They will not be considered. A completed application package includes (Please do not staple documents):
-a completed application form
-an official high school transcript showing grades from the past three years
-a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or guidance counselor (one only)
-a copy of scores from an SAT or similar national college entrance exam
